Acarology Laboratory
There is one place at Lofarma that truly embodies our approach to research: the Acarology Laboratory. Here, mites are reared, studied and monitored on a daily basis, because in-depth knowledge of the allergen is the starting point for developing reliable, high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic solutions.
The laboratory is a highly specialised facility dedicated to the rearing, study and management of mite colonies intended for diagnostic and therapeutic use. This work ensures an in-house supply of biological material of controlled origin for the production of allergen extracts, guaranteeing traceability and quality throughout the entire supply chain.
The laboratory manages seven species of mites, reared under strictly controlled conditions and in compliance with GMP. Temperature, humidity and diet are tailored to the specific biological requirements of each species, to ensure uniformity, reproducibility and stability of the allergenic profile over time.
Clinical significance of mites
House dust mites and food storage mites are one of the leading causes of respiratory allergies worldwide. They belong to the class of arachnids, lack obvious body segmentation and measure between 300 and 500 micrometres in size.
Of the approximately 50,000 known species, around 250 may have an impact on human and animal health. House dust mites thrive in environments with high humidity and materials containing keratin, such as mattresses, upholstered fabrics, rugs and carpets, resulting in constant exposure for sensitised individuals.
Production process
The colonies are reared on specific nutrient substrates, formulated to promote growth and reproduction whilst maintaining a stable protein profile in the organisms. Every stage of the process is documented and subject to continuous monitoring in accordance with defined quality standards.
At the end of the rearing cycle, the mites are processed using extraction procedures designed to obtain high-purity allergen solutions. The extracts obtained serve as the raw material for Lofarma’s diagnostic products and immunotherapies, with full traceability ensuring the biological material is tracked from its origin to the finished product.
