Prick test
Allergy skin tests carried out using the prick test technique are essential tools for diagnosing allergic sensitisation. They must be performed by qualified medical staff who are able to carry out the test appropriately and correctly assess both the skin response and the pathogenic and clinical significance of any sensitisation found.
The procedure involves applying a drop of allergen extract to the skin on the palmar surface of the forearm, followed by pricking the skin through the drop using a special lancet set to a predetermined depth. Negative control (diluent solution) and positive control (histamine 10 mg/ml) tests must be carried out at the same time. Skin reactions are read 15–20 minutes after application, when the reaction is at its peak.
The assessment of a positive test result and its clinical interpretation are the responsibility of the doctor, who will apply the diagnostic criteria most appropriate to the patient’s clinical context.
